I could learn to enjoy hockey.

Ok, so I’ll admit that I never really cared about hockey. After living on the East Coast, however, my interest was definitely sparked. Watching one helluva Stanley Cup Finals between the Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins made fans out of myself and Don, however short-lived. I can now say with confidence that I would fully support an NHL team in Seattle.
The Gold Medal game with Canada this weekend obviously has me biased, but good lord, that was a great game to watch. I still don’t understand all of the rules or know players other than the big name guys, but I’m willing to learn. I’m willing to become attached to a team, and willing to root for guys that get paid to wear ice skates.
I realize that the Vancouver Canucks are only a few hours away, but they’re not even from this country. While I’d enjoy going to one of their games, I’m not adopting them as “my team” any time soon. The only way I’m willing to jump into this thing with both feet is if I have an actual rooting interest, which means Seattle would need to get a team.
With the NHL’s financial troubles over the past decade, expansion might be out of the question. However, relocation isn’t. I’m not sure how I’d feel about stealing another city’s team, especially since I know how it feels post-Sonics. But I will say that the few friends I do have that are hockey fans are more die-hard about their sport than I am about any sport. So major props to them for that.
I’m not really sure what the hell the point of this post is or was, but basically, I’ve become semi-interested in hockey. I would support an NHL team more than I currently support our MLS team. I mean, that’s not very hard, considering I have about zero interest in the Sounders or soccer in general. But still, the fact that I’m now open to embracing the sport of hockey is kind of a big deal for me, and I felt like it was important enough a revelation to blog about.
