The Seahawks made this weekend their bitch.

I already wrote about the Seahawks first two picks, but we had 7 more picks after the first round. And holy shit, we absolutely killed it this weekend. Like, Ben Roethlisberger would be jealous at the rape that took place. That good.

In the 2nd round, we originally had the 40th overall pick. Then, we traded for Charlie Whitehurst and swapped 2nd rounders with San Diego, moving from 40 down to 60. People were really up in arms at first, but this draft was so deep that it didn’t even matter. With the 60th pick, the Seahawks took Notre Dame WR Golden Tate. Besides having the coolest football name since Mack Strong, Tate was the 3rd best WR in the entire draft. You could argue for Illinois WR Arrelious Benn, who I also think is a really good player, but if we still had 40 and Tate and Benn were both available, I still would have preferred Tate. His biggest knocks are that he’s too small and Mel Kiper, Jr. said something about him being faster without pads. Well, yeah. Everyone is faster without pads.
All I know is I watched Tate single-handedly destroy the Huskies in South Bend and make a ridiculous catch on a Hail Mary pass to end the half against my poor, hapless Cougs. Tate only played 3 seasons at Notre Dame (and really only 2, considering he had only a handful of catches as a true freshman). In 2 seasons with the Fighting Irish, he became the all-time leader in receiving yards. I can’t even fathom how that is remotely possible. He can return punts and kicks, and was a running back in high school. Watching him on an end-around or a reverse, it’s evident that he knows how to make people miss.
We got a player I would have taken with the 40th pick all the way at pick #60. That’s incredible value. I honestly wouldn’t have been surprised if Tate was selected at the bottom of the first round. He really is that talented. Think of a slower, stockier version of Steve Smith. Dude is a play-maker and every time he touches the ball, he has a chance to take it to the house.

With no 3rd round selection (we traded it to Philadelphia last year to get Deon Butler), we had to wait until Day 3 for the fireworks. But holy Santa Claus shit, fireworks there were.
We swapped picks with Tennessee, moving down 7 spots in the 4th round to get two players; one, former USC RB and Pete Carroll favorite, LenDale White. We also got more depth on the defensive line with DT Kevin Vickerson. All of this for swapping 4th round and 6th round picks. We moved down 7 spots in the 4th round and 11 in the 6th. So, basically, we got our starting RB for free. I was absolutely pumped when I heard about this, because White is the big, bruising back we need to compliment Justin Forsett’s speed and quickness.
After we moved down, we selected Oregon CB Walter Thurmond. NFL Network’s Mike Mayock loves Thurmond. Had it not been for injuries, Thurmond would have been a 2nd round pick. Instead, we got him in the 4th round after trading down. More great value. He’ll add depth to a secondary that wasn’t great coming into the weekend, but suddenly looks a lot better.
Later in the 4th round, we selected a huge DE/DT from North Carolina, EJ Wilson. Wilson is 6’3, 290 lbs and set a UNC record by squatting 670 pounds. Which is, wow, a fucking lot. He’s sort of a one-trick-pony, and his swim move could use some work, but holy hell his bull rush will eat up smaller offensive linemen. I’m not sure he’ll be anything special, but he does add depth (and size) to our defensive line. Plus he’s a Tarheel and, well, fuck Duke.
The 5th round started off like the round before it with completely unexpected fireworks. With less than 30 seconds left on the clock, the Seahawks logo turned into a New York Jets logo. So, um, we traded the pick? For what? The message boards over at FieldGulls jokingly suggested all-purpose RB Leon Washington. You can imagine my surprise — and sheer joy — when Rich Eisen of NFL Network announced that we had, in fact, landed Washington (along with an additional 7th round pick).
No words were spoken. I stood shocked, jaw dropped. I picked up my phone and dialed Don’s number. The conversation went something like this:
Don: “Hello?”
Kyle: “We just got Leon Washington.”
Don: “Um, what??”
Kyle: “We just got Leon Washington.”
Don: “What?! How??”
Kyle: “We just got Leon Washington PLUS a 7th rounder for our first 5th.”
Don: “I don’t believe you.”
Kyle: “We just got Leon Washington for free.”
Don: “Holy fucking shit.”
Kyle: “LEON WASHINGTON FOR FREE!!!!!”
Don: (silent erection)

With our second 5th round pick, we took a slower version of Taylor Mays. Also, a version with less sand in his vagina. Kam Chancellor is a 6’3, 231 FS from Virginia Tech. Just huge. He’s sort of a liability in coverage, but we’ll ask him more to play in the box and stuff the run. He should excel on special teams, and adding depth is always a good thing. He’s still learning the position, as he played Rover for the Hokies up until his senior year. So while I don’t think he’ll be making the Pro Bowl any time soon, we had almost no depth at any position, and we are doing everything we can to remedy that. Good pick with a fair amount of upside.
In the 6th round, after swapping picks again with Tennessee, we picked former USC Tight End Anthony McCoy. Obviously Pete Carroll knows this guy in and out. He has the late first/early second round talent, and if he didn’t have off the field issues, would have gone much, much sooner. He is stupid and smoked marijuana before going to the Scouting Combine. He unsurprisingly failed the piss test in Indianapolis, and when people heard that, his stock dropped like a Sorority girl’s panties in Pullman. He legitimately has the talent to become the best TE in this entire draft. I don’t care in the slightest about him smoking weed. Instead, I question is logic in smoking before he was going to audition for scouts, losing millions of dollars by failing. So seriously. I don’t care about the pot. You’ve smoked pot, I’ve smoked pot, everyone’s smoked pot. He’s in college. It happens. I have no qualms about it whatsoever. He is going to be a steal. Love this pick.
Our two 7th round picks have a chance to make the roster, but I wouldn’t put money on it. The first, former Arizona State DE Dexter Davis, has a high motor and has a fair amount of upside. However, he is vastly undersized at 244 lbs, and a move to linebacker might be his only hope of catching on. Having said that, he reminds me of Nick Reed who we took in the 7th round last year and tore up the PreSeason, earning a roster spot by sheer will and determination.
The final pick for the ‘Hawks is a really, really long shot. Jameson Konz played LB at Kent State for his first 3 years. Last year, he switched to offense, playing TE, WR, and FB. He doesn’t really have a position, but he is a freak athlete. Listed at 6’3 and 227 lbs, he reportedly ran a sub 4.5 40 yard dash and had an astonishing 46 inch vertical leap. While I’ll believe the latter when I see it, the fact that people are accepting that it’s at least somewhere close to that makes my head a-splode.
Also, he totally looks like “Sunshine” from Remember the Titans.
After the draft was over, we also signed Undrafted Free Agent Jeff Byers, a C/G who played for Pete Carroll at USC. I was really surprised he didn’t get drafted, and I’m really confident he will make the team, adding much-needed depth to a thin offensive line.
Overall, the Seahawks didn’t have a good draft; they had a great draft. In fact, I could argue that the Seahawks had the best draft of any team. You go into the draft hoping to get at least 2 starters, and possibly 3. We wound up getting 5. Okung will start from Day 1. Thomas will start from Day 1. Tate will start either at WR (he only has to beat out Deon Branch’s knees) or PR/KR. White will start. Washington will start at PR/KR. The rest of the picks add much-needed depth, and that’s all you can ask for from your mid round picks.
John Schneider and Pete Carroll absolutely killed it this weekend, and they’ve restored my faith in the Seahawks in general. Consider me tickled Seahawk blue.
